Happy And Succeeding In The Future Of Work
If You Can’t Get A Salary Increase Due To Inflation, Ask For This Instead
With inflation raging, which is escalating the costs of everything, you may be thinking about asking for a raise. It’s a reasonable request. With the inflation rate spiking over 9%, your paycheck doesn’t go as far anymore. The average American household will have to spend an extra $5,200—$433 a month—just to consume the same goods and services as last year. Here’s the dilemma: it’s a reasonable ask, but the economy, job market and sentiment of business leaders have shifted.

More American Workers Are Taking On Second Jobs As Inflation Rages
With U.S. inflation racing ahead worker wages, a growing number of Americans are taking on second jobs to make ends meet. Many people have already reined in spending where they can, while others have tapped their pandemic savings to cover the rising cost of food, gas, rent and other necessities. Yet the highest inflation in 40 years is weighing heavily on millions of households. Three-quarters of middle-income Americans say they don’t earn enough to pay for the cost of living, according to a recent survey.
The Truth Behind ‘No One Wants to Work Anymore’
Nobody wants to work anymore. It’s the rallying cry of business owners, recruiters, and cranky people who aren’t getting the coffee fast enough at Starbucks. But it’s not at all new. Gen-X may complain that Gen-Z doesn’t want to work (and if that’s the case, they should look in the mirror as Gen-X raised the current crop of newly minted adults). Paul Fairie, a researcher and instructor at the University of Calgary, posted a fascinating viral Twitter thread documenting how the complaints are not new to this generation.
Google Fires Engineer Who Warned That Company’s AI Reached Sentience
On Friday, Google fired Blake Lemoine, a software engineer who went public with his concerns that a conversational technology the company was developing had achieved sentience. Lemoine went outside the company to consult with experts on the tech’s potential sentience, then publicly shared his concerns in a Medium post and subsequent interview with The Washington Post. Google had suspended Lemoine in June for violating a confidentiality policy, and he’s now been fired. Lemoine himself is slated to explain what happened on an upcoming episode of the podcast for Big Technology, a Substack that first reported the story.

Tech’s largest companies, as well as their smaller competitors, are looking to cut back as they face a litany of headaches: Billions of dollars in unused commercial real estate; supply-chain and cost issues; evaporating funding; a 21% drop in global M&A activity in the first half of the year to $2.2 trillion, according to new data from Refinitiv; an all-but-shut window on IPOs; wage inflation; talent retention.
