Do you accept life with COVID-19 as the new normal? Most Americans think it’s time to, according to a new poll, as 2022 marks another year dealing with the virus’s spread and its potential to mutate into new variants such as delta and omicron. Specifically, 70% of Americans agree that “it’s time we accept that COVID is here to stay and we just need to get on with our lives,” according to a new poll released Jan. 31 by Monmouth University in New Jersey. Answers varied along partisan lines.
Weekly Jobless Claims Total 238,000, Fewer Than Expected
Initial filings for unemployment claims totaled a bit fewer than expected last week as companies looked to overcome the impact of the omicron spread. Claims for the week ended Jan. 29 were 238,000, a touch lower than the 245,000 Dow Jones estimate, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That was also a decline from the previous week’s upwardly revised 261,000.

Ulta Beauty CEO Says It’s Not Enough To Put Black-Owned Brands On Shelves
Ulta Beauty CEO Dave Kimbell said it is not enough for stores to put Black-owned brands on shelves. Instead, he said, the retailer wants to make sure those brands gain a fan following and ultimately, have staying power. “It’s one thing to arrive on our shelves, but it’s another thing to thrive,” he said. “And that’s what we want, every brand that we carry — and certainly BIPOC [Black, Indigenous and people of color] founded brands.”
Companies Like Nike And Disney Are Hiring Like Crazy For The Metaverse—And It’s Just The Start
The metaverse may be all about virtual worlds, but as companies increasingly incorporate it into their business models, it’s yielding several jobs IRL. In October, Facebook, now called Meta, became the biggest company pledging to create metaverse careers. The social media giant committed to hiring 10,000 people in Europe over the next five years to help build the metaverse. As of Wednesday, Meta’s job listings website contained 13 jobs, mostly in the U.S., that included the word “metaverse.”
