JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon Says AI Could Ultimately Reduce The Workweek To 3.5 Days—But There’s A Catch
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon predicts that artificial intelligence will lead to a three-and-a-half-day workweek for the next generation of employees, in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Monday. Dimon shared how his bank is already deeply involved with AI and marveled at how effective the new technology is, making things more efficient for his brokers, bankers, traders, money managers and back-office operational teams.
U.S. Economy Creates 336,000 Jobs In September, Nearly Twice The Number Expected
The US economy added 336,000 jobs in September, highlighting concern that the labor market isn’t cooling as fast as the Federal Reserve would like in its battle against inflation. The nonfarm payroll additions were nearly double the 170,000 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected. Revisions to the August and July jobs reports released Friday showed there were 119,000 more jobs created during those months than previously reported, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Devastating Effects Of Long-Term Unemployment
During the early days of the pandemic and throughout 2022 and 2023, there has been a steady flow of layoff announcements. Losing one’s job can be an extremely difficult and emotionally taxing experience for many people. Layoffs can negatively impact nearly all aspects of life and require time and support to process the loss. A downsized person can go through the gamut of emotions—shock, disbelief, sadness and anger. For those lacking a financial safety net, the job loss can be traumatic for the impacted person and their family.

Layoffs within the technology sector continue but have slowed. The focus for businesses has shifted to return-to-office mandates, which have faced resistance from tech workers. Companies like Amazon, Apple, Google and TikTok have enforced their in-office policies by reportedly tracking employee badge swipes to ensure compliance. This kind of surveillance could nudge some employees to quit, but the labor market is cooler now than during the Great Resignation.

The United States is enduring record-high inflation, ever-increasing costs for everything from food to gas and the threat of a looming recession. Surprisingly, despite these and other worrisome economic and geopolitical events, Americans continue spending money on travel, dining out, attending music concerts and sporting events, engaging in revenge travel and shopping binges. U.S. adults are prioritizing short-term expenses over their long-term savings.
What Today’s CEOs Are Most Concerned About
Top executives are confronting various challenges as they steer their firm amid what feels like a never-ending storm. International management consulting giant KPMG conducted a recent survey of more than 1,300 CEOs of the world’s biggest businesses to gain insights into their concerns. Evidencing the rapid changes taking place in the business world, the 2023 CEO Outlook report indicates that geopolitics and political uncertainty are now the leading perceived risks this year and were not considered a top five concern in last year’s study. Executives must deftly navigate a heated political climate that now permeates the workplace, including politicizing environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.
Clorox And MGM Resorts Aren’t The Only Companies Dealing With Cyberattack Damage
It has been a very eventful couple of weeks for cyberattack-related news. It all kind of started Wednesday of last week when Johnson Controls revealed it had been hit by a cyberattack. The company warned it “experienced disruptions in portions of its internal information technology infrastructure and applications.” And while the financial impact of that attack has not yet been determined, it also cautioned, it “is assessing whether the incident will impact its ability to timely release its fourth quarter and full fiscal year results.”
