The United States government recently reported that there were 9.2 million jobs available. The abundance of opportunities available seems amazingly high. The number of jobs open nearly matches the amount of people searching for a new position. You’d think with so many roles remaining available, hiring would be red-hot and the unemployment rate plummet. However, this isn’t happening. The simplest explanation is that there is a big mismatch going on in the job market. Here’s what’s going on behind the scenes.
The Covid-19 Pandemic Caused A Long-Term Joblessness Crisis
The pandemic has led to the loss of around 22 million jobs in wealthy countries and 114 million across the world. A report from the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an intergovernmental economic organization dedicated to stimulating progress, warns of the risk of a rapid rise in long-term joblessness.

77% Of Executives Plan To Hire In The Months Ahead, According To A New Poll
Overall, the West Monroe poll included responses from 150 U.S. executives. A portion of the poll asked respondents to detail their third-quarter hiring plans. More than three-quarters of respondents (77%) said they expect to hire additional workers in the third quarter. About one-in-five respondents (19%) expected “little to no change” in the third quarter, and 4% said they “expect to lay off more people.”

That’s according to Howard Lutnick, the chief executive officer of Cantor Fitzgerald. “These are hard jobs,” Lutnick told Bloomberg on 8 July. “Young bankers who decide they’re working too hard — choose another living is my view.” Late nights and weekends should be expected given the demands clients place on bankers to get deals completed to tight deadlines, Lutnick said, comparing banking to medicine in terms of the work needed at an early stage to become successful.
